Different Types of Headache and Their Treatment

Headaches are a very common condition that most people will experience many times during their lives. The main symptom of a headache is pain in your head or face.

Headaches can be primary, or they can be secondary which means they are a side-effect of a separate illness or injury.

A pain management doctor can generally tell the cause of headache by talking to you and examining you thoroughly. Treatment may involve taking medication only when you get the headaches, taking daily medication to prevent them or, sometimes, stopping a medication you are already taking. There are several types of headaches, and tension-type headaches are the most common.

How are different types of headache treated?

Different types of headaches will be managed differently. Treatments could range from simple dietary adjustments to minimally-invasive procedures performed by an interventional pain management specialist. Not everyone will respond to the same treatment, even for the same types of headaches. If you’re experiencing headaches, then instead of treating them on your own, it is always better to speak with a pain management doctor about putting together a treatment plan for your headache.
